Quick Answer

Train from Rossio (40 min, €2.35). Leave by 7:30-8:00am. See Pena + Moorish Castle + Regaleira. Lunch in town. Back in Lisbon by 5pm. Total cost: €45-55 per person. Buy tickets online the night before.

Transport

Getting to Sintra from Lisbon

Train from Lisbon Rossio

Recommended
€2.35 each way40 minutesEvery 30 minutes

The best option for most visitors. Trains depart from Rossio station in Baixa (Lisbon's historic center). You need a Viva Viagem card (€0.50, reloadable) or a Lisboa Card. Note: Lisbon is transitioning from Viva Viagem to the Navegante card system — check current availability when you arrive. The journey follows the scenic route through the Sintra hills. Planning your Lisbon base? See our where to stay in Lisbon guide for the best neighborhoods near Rossio station.

 • Cheapest option at €4.70 return
 • Runs frequently (every 30 min)
 • Drops you right at Sintra center
 • No traffic or parking worries
 • Can be standing-room only at peak times (9-10am) — we stood the whole 40 minutes on a Saturday in June
 • Rossio station has limited signage — look for the CP Urbanos entrance
Step by Step
 1. 1Go to Rossio station in Lisbon (metro: Rossio or Restauradores). Enter through the horseshoe-arch doorway on Praça dos Restauradores.
 2. 2Buy/load a Viva Viagem card at the machines (select 'Sintra' as destination, €2.35 + €0.50 for card if new).
 3. 3Tap in at the gates. Platform is usually announced 5 min before departure.
 4. 4Exit at Sintra (final stop). Walk 100m downhill to the historic center, or catch bus 434 outside the station.

Train from Oriente Station

€2.35 each way50 minutesEvery 30 minutes

Alternative if you're staying near Parque das Nações or arriving from the airport. Same train line, just a different starting point. Passes through Rossio on the way.

 • Convenient if near the airport or Parque das Nações
 • Same price as Rossio
 • 10 minutes longer than from Rossio
 • Often more crowded by the time it reaches Sintra

Uber / Taxi

€25–40 one way30–45 minutesOn demand

More comfortable but significantly more expensive. Makes sense if you're in a group of 3-4 (splits to €8-10 per person) or if you want to start at Pena Palace directly without the bus 434 wait.

 • Door-to-door convenience
 • Can be dropped at Pena Palace gate (skips bus 434 queue)
 • Cost-effective for groups of 3-4
 • €25-40 each way (€50-80 return) for solo travelers
 • Traffic on the N249 road can add 15+ minutes
 • Parking in Sintra is very limited if driving yourself

Organized Tour

€40–80 per personFull day (8-10 hrs)Daily departures

Pre-arranged bus tours from Lisbon typically cover Sintra + Cascais + Cabo da Roca. Convenient if you don't want to plan anything, but you'll spend more time on the bus and less at each site. Most tours give you 2 hours at Sintra — not enough.

 • Zero planning required
 • Usually includes Cascais and Cabo da Roca
 • Transport and guide included
 • Only 2 hours at Sintra — barely enough for 1 palace
 • Fixed schedule with no flexibility
 • More expensive than DIY (€40-80 vs €25-40)
 • Large groups at peak tourist times
Once There

Getting Around Sintra

Money Saver
The bus 434 day pass (€7.60) only makes sense if you're visiting Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle. If you're doing Regaleira + town center + National Palace, everything is walkable and you don't need bus 434 at all.

Bus 434 (Hop-on Hop-off)

~€5 single / €13.50 day passEvery 20 min (theory) — expect 25-30 min waits in summer

Route: Station → Town Center → Moorish Castle → Pena Palace → Station

The day pass is worth it if you plan to ride 2+ times. Only useful for the Pena/Moorish Castle loop — doesn't go to Regaleira, Monserrate, or Cabo da Roca.

Tuk-Tuk

€5-15 per ride depending on distanceAvailable at the station and town center

Route: Anywhere in Sintra area

Useful for Monserrate Palace (no bus 434 service). Drivers will offer full tours (€30-50/hr) but you don't need one — use them for point-to-point transport only. We bargained a tuk-tuk to Monserrate for €6 by being friendly and flexible on timing — always negotiate.

Walking

FreeAlways available

Route: Station → Town Center (10 min), Town → Regaleira (10 min), Town → Moorish Castle (30 min uphill)

Walking downhill from Pena/Moorish Castle to town is easy and scenic (20 min). Walking uphill to Pena is a steep 40-minute hike — take the bus up, walk down.

Bus 403

€4.50 per rideevery 60-90 minutes (gaps can stretch to 2 hours in winter — check the Carris Metropolitana app for the live schedule)

Route: Sintra Station → Cabo da Roca → Cascais

Only way to reach Cabo da Roca by public transport. From Cabo da Roca, you can continue to Cascais (30 min) and take the train directly to Lisbon from there.

Prep

Before You Go — Checklist

 • Buy palace tickets online the night before (saves 20-30 min in queues)
 • Check bus 434 timetable at the Carris Metropolitana website — first bus ~9:15am from Sintra station
 • Wear comfortable walking shoes (cobblestones + steep forest paths)
 • Pack water and snacks — options inside palaces are overpriced and limited
 • Bring layers — Sintra's hilltop is 5-7°C cooler than Lisbon, even in summer
 • Charge your phone — you'll use it for maps, tickets, and photos all day
Route 1

The Greatest Hits

Most popular — see the top 3 palaces

Best for: First-time visitors who want the classic Sintra experience. €45-55 per person (transport + tickets + lunch)
Pena Palace (grounds)Moorish CastleQuinta da Regaleira
7:30am

Train from Lisbon Rossio

Take the Sintra line from Rossio station (or Oriente). Trains every 20-30 min. Buy a return ticket with your Viva Viagem card. We took the 7:50am from Rossio and snagged a window seat for the whole scenic stretch through the hills — worth timing for.

Train — €2.35 each way

8:15am

Arrive Sintra station

Walk out of the station. The bus 434 stop is directly in front. Buy a €13.50 hop-on/hop-off ticket from the driver or machine.

Bus 434 — €13.50 day pass

8:30am

Bus 434 to Pena Palace

10-minute ride up the winding mountain road. Get off at the Pena Palace stop. Walk 10 minutes uphill to the entrance.

The bus gets crowded after 9:30am. Being on the first bus is a huge advantage. We once waited 40 minutes for bus 434 at 10am in July — never again.

9:00am

Pena Palace — grounds and terraces

Explore the colorful terraces, Queen's Terrace viewpoint, and park trails. The exterior is the star — skip the interior queue.

Grounds-only ticket (€12) is all you need. The interior adds €8 and a 45-min queue for cramped rooms.

11:00am

Walk to Moorish Castle

20-25 minute gate-to-gate downhill walk through the forest from Pena to the Moorish Castle entrance (including through Pena's grounds to the exit). A beautiful, shaded trail.

Walk — 20-25 min downhill (free)

11:15am

Moorish Castle walls

Walk the 1,000-year-old fortress walls for the best panoramic views in Sintra. The Royal Tower summit is the highlight.

This is the best-value ticket in Sintra (€12). Don't rush — the views from every section of wall are different.

12:15pm

Bus 434 back to town center

Catch the bus from the Moorish Castle stop back to Sintra town center. Or walk downhill (25-30 min).

12:45pm

Lunch in Sintra town

Eat at Tascantiga (best food, reserve ahead), Romaria de Baco (solid traditional), or grab pastries from Piriquita to-go.

The prato do dia (daily special) at traditional restaurants is €10-12 and generous. Skip Café Paris — overpriced for the quality.

2:00pm

Walk to Quinta da Regaleira

10-minute walk from town center. Regaleira is the afternoon highlight — underground tunnels, the Initiation Well, and lush gardens.

Allow 2 full hours here. Kids and adults alike get absorbed in the tunnel network.

4:00pm

Pastry stop & town stroll

Walk back to town. Grab travesseiros from Piriquita if you haven't already. Browse the shops on Rua das Padarias.

4:30pm

Train back to Lisbon

Walk to the station (15 min) and catch the return train. You'll be back in Lisbon by 5:15pm.

Train — 40 min to Rossio/Oriente

Route 2

The Crowd Avoider

Reverse order — beat the tour groups

Best for: Summer visitors or anyone who hates crowds. €40-50 per person (less bus cost if walking throughout)
Quinta da RegaleiraMoorish CastlePena Palace (grounds)
7:30am

Train from Lisbon Rossio

Same train as above. Aim for the 7:30am or earlier departure.

Train — €2.35 each way

8:15am

Walk to Quinta da Regaleira

Skip bus 434 entirely. Walk from the station to Regaleira (20 min). You'll arrive before the crowds.

Walk — 20 min (free)

10:00am

Quinta da Regaleira

Be at the entrance when it opens at 10am. Go directly to the Initiation Well — you'll have it nearly to yourself.

The first 30-45 minutes here are golden. By 10:30am the tour groups arrive. Explore tunnels first, palace building second.

11:30am

Walk up to Moorish Castle

Uphill walk (30-40 min) via the road or forest paths. A steeper but more rewarding approach than bus 434.

Walk — 30-40 min uphill

12:00pm

Moorish Castle walls

By now most visitors are at Pena. The castle will be emptier than the morning peak.

1:00pm

Walk to Pena Palace

20-25 minute uphill walk from Moorish Castle through the forest.

Walk — 20-25 min

1:15pm

Pena Palace grounds

Afternoon crowds thin as tour groups leave. The light is warmer too. Explore the terraces and park.

Afternoon light on the yellow and red walls is actually better for photos than morning.

3:00pm

Bus 434 back to town + late lunch

Take bus 434 downhill. Eat a late lunch in town — restaurants are emptier after 2pm.

4:30pm

Train back to Lisbon

Return train to Lisbon. Back by 5:15pm.

Train — 40 min

Avoid These

Common Mistakes

Trying to visit all 5 palaces in one day

Reality: Physically possible but miserable. You'll rush through everything and spend more time in queues than actually seeing things.

Fix: Pick 2-3 palaces maximum. Our Greatest Hits route covers the best three.

Not buying tickets online in advance

Reality: The ticket office queue at Pena Palace can be 20-30 minutes in summer. You'll also miss the earliest entry slots.

Fix: Buy all tickets at parquesdesintra.pt and regaleira.pt the night before.

Taking a late morning train (10am+)

Reality: You lose 2-3 prime hours. The palaces get crowded fast and you'll feel rushed for the rest of the day.

Fix: Take the 7:30am or 8:00am train from Rossio. Being early is the single best strategy.

Starting at Pena Palace with bus 434

Reality: Everyone does this. The first few buses are packed and Pena is crowded by 10am.

Fix: Start at Regaleira (opens 10am, walk from station) and do Pena in the afternoon. See our Crowd Avoider route.

Buying Pena Palace full interior ticket

Reality: The interior is cramped, poorly lit rooms with a 30-60 min queue. Most visitors say it's not worth the extra €8.

Fix: Buy the €12 grounds-only ticket. The terraces and exterior are the real attraction.

No layers or rain gear

Reality: Sintra's hilltop is 5-7°C cooler than Lisbon with unpredictable fog and drizzle. Many visitors freeze in their Lisbon summer clothes. We left Lisbon in 32°C sunshine and hit actual fog and 18°C at the Moorish Castle two hours later.

Fix: Pack a light jacket and a compact rain layer, even in summer.

Money Saver
Skip the organized tours. They cost €60-100+ per person, follow a fixed schedule, give you less time at each palace, and skip Regaleira. The train + bus 434 is easy to navigate independently and saves €30-60 per person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely — it's the most popular day trip from Lisbon. The train takes 40 minutes from Rossio station. Leave by 7:30-8:00am, return by 5pm. You'll comfortably see 2-3 palaces, eat lunch, and explore the town. For the full Lisbon itinerary with Sintra included as a day trip, see our 3-day Lisbon itinerary.

Our Greatest Hits route: Train → Bus 434 → Pena Palace (grounds) → walk to Moorish Castle → bus to town → lunch → Regaleira → train home. Total: ~€45-55 per person including everything.

Go independently. Organized tours cost €60-100+ per person, follow a fixed schedule, give you less time at each palace, and skip Regaleira (not included in most tours). The train + bus 434 is easy and much cheaper.

Rossio station (central Lisbon, near Praça do Comércio) or Oriente station (near Parque das Nações). Both take 40 minutes. Rossio is more convenient for most tourists. Trains run every 20-30 minutes.

Budget version: €30-40 (train €4.50 + 2 palaces ~€20 + packed lunch). Standard: €45-55 (train + bus 434 + 3 palaces + lunch). Comfortable: €70-90 (add a taxi, more palaces, nicer restaurant).

Technically yes, but both feel rushed. If you must: visit 1-2 Sintra palaces in the morning, bus 403 to Cascais via Cabo da Roca in the afternoon, train from Cascais back to Lisbon. You'll sacrifice depth for breadth.

Rossio station in Baixa (central Lisbon). Enter through the horseshoe-arched doorway on Praça dos Restauradores — we walked past the entrance twice before realizing it was behind the ornate Neo-Manueline facade. You can also depart from Oriente station (near the airport), but it takes 10 minutes longer.

Yes. Buy one at the station machines for €0.50 (reloadable). Load the Sintra train fare (€2.35). The same card works on Lisbon metro and buses. If you have a Lisboa Card, the Sintra train is included.

Yes, if you plan to visit Pena Palace or Moorish Castle. A single ride is ~€5, the day pass is €13.50. You'll ride it at least twice (up and down), so the pass saves money. If you're only visiting Regaleira and the town center, you don't need bus 434 at all.

No. Parking in Sintra is extremely limited and congested. The train + bus 434 + walking is more practical. If you do drive: free parking at Volta do Duche lot near the town center (fills by 10am in summer), free street parking in São Pedro de Penaferrim (15-minute walk from the center), and a small paid lot near the train station. Never attempt to drive up to Pena Palace — the road is single-lane with no parking at the top for private vehicles. The only exception to driving: if you want to combine Cabo da Roca and the beaches in one day.

Bus 403 back to Sintra (40 min), then train to Lisbon. Or — better route — bus 403 forward to Cascais (30 min), then train from Cascais to Lisbon Cais do Sodré (40 min, €2.35). This avoids backtracking.
